Was Diane Sawyer Drunk During Election Coverage?

Submitted by on November 7, 2012 – 9:00 am Comments

Diane Sawyer is a familiar face on ABC News; in fact she is quite a respected TV journalist. But, here is a piece of rumor, which if it is true would no doubt have you yelling ‘what the hell’. Turns out, during the coverage of the presidential elections Sawyer might actually have been drunk. Or so feel many viewers, who have accused her of being drunk on the air, after she appeared to slur some of her words, giggled and seemed to stretch out behind the desk.

If this piece of rumor is actually true ‘what the hell’ was Sawyer thinking, some would ask. But surely, someone of her reputation wouldn’t actually do something as foolish as getting drunk and that too during the coverage of the presidential elections, which is keenly followed by millions. What set the alarm bells ringing were her comments like “My grandfather used to prognosticate by the gourds he grew. He was very good in Southern Kentucky”.  Also, when ABC News’s David Muir mentioned that defeated Republican candidate Mitt Romney could make a concession speech, she allegedly replied: “Yes David I know, and the land and the great continent of what might have been”.

Even if you didn’t see her covering the elections, surely these quotes that you are now reading must have you yelling ‘what the hell’. Many who trust Sawyer’s credibility as an anchor cut her some slack, by speculating that she might have taken muscle relaxants or must simply be tired. A Twitter parody, @DrnkDianeSawyer, also picked up hundreds of followers for tweets such as: “nothig to c here guys im ok d’ont worry abot me” and: “hey guys wh o won i fell aslee?p”.

Sawyer on her part must surely be yelling ‘what the hell’ after hearing about and reading all the speculation and rumors that are doing the rounds. Either she must be cursing her stars for getting drunk, or if the allegations are untrue, she must be extremely hurt and embarrassed. ABC on its part has not yet commented on the speculations, and probably wants to confirm Sawyer’s side of the story before going ahead and making an official statement.
