TLC Welcomes ‘Breaking Amish’

two of the amish castTLC is going Amish! There’s a new reality show coming to a TV near you. The new show will follow the lives of five young people who leave behind their small town life to find themselves in the city. We’ve seen shows like this before, but what separates this one from all the others? Those who star in this show are either Amish or Mennonite and are leaving their homes. The new TLC show will be called “Breaking Amish.” I actually know a little bit on this topic, as my step-grandmother left her Amish lifestyle to run away with my grandfather.

Many Amish adolescents go through Rumaspringa, in which they get to decide for themselves if they will join the church or not. This situation is a bit different for Jeremiah, Kate, Abe, Rebecca, and Sabrina. The five of them travel to New York City to try and figure out who they are, their own personal identities, and what the future holds for them.

Jeremiah is 32 years old. He was adopted by an Amish family and has always dreamed of driving for a living, even though he’s never driven anything but a horse and buggy. He cannot wait to get behind the wheel. He mentions being adopted and says that he was “kind of thrown into this Amish crap. It’s not cool.” So he is leaving behind his Amish girlfriend to experience the Big Apple. In a heartbreaking goodbye he says, “So I guess I’ll never see you again.”

Just like with Jeremiah, Sabrina, who is 25 years old, was adopted into a Mennonite family. She is desperate to learn about her Italian, Puerto Rican heritage. She’s hoping that she’ll be able to learn more about her identity and maybe begin to search for her biological parents.

Kate, 21 years old, aspires to be a model. She is the daughter of her town’s bishop, and has a very hard time adjusting to all the  new technology surrounding her. She has always dreamed of fashion and even used markers to paint her nails as a child. Her father eventually banned any fashion related items from their home, such as magazines, make-up, jewelry, and other ‘vanity’ items. She has previously been convicted of a DUI, though I don’t know how… What was she driving? “I just need to get away and find out who I really am,” said Kate.

This decision to leave their lifestyles behind does have its consequences. The cast of “Breaking Amish” may be shunned by their families for being on the show. Jeremiah said that if he does decide to leave the Amish life behind, he knows he will be on his own.

The trailer for the show shows the cast having a hard time adjusting to their new New York lives. It shows Kate having a hard time figuring out how to use an elevator, and Jeremiah cannot figure out how to withdraw money from an ATM. It also shows the cast shopping for new clothes, including lingerie. The latest TLC reality show premieres on Sunday, September 9th.
