robin in gma setRobin Roberts, co-host of Good Morning America is taking a leave of absence from work. The cancer survivor said her blood and bone marrow disease is taking it’s toll on her. She has said she’ not been feeling well and is taking time off to relax and “get some vacay.” Roberts had previously planned to take some time off, but her break came much earlier than expected due to a bone marrow transplant. Roberts had originally been expected to take her leave of absence in late August or early September.

Roberts just recently announced that she has myelodysplastic syndrome or MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease that was formerly known as prelukemia. During the 51 year old Roberts break, some big names are expected to contribute to Good Morning America, including Katie Couric, Diane Sawyers, Barbara Walters and other ladies from the “The View”.

Roberts said she received her diagnosis on the very same day that Good Morning America beat the Today Show for the first time in over 16 years. A few weeks ago, as she sat during a procedure to test her own bone marrow, she was told that she would be interviewing President Obama the very  next day.  There have been many up and downs for her recently.

After Roberts’ announcement in June about her diagnosis, she encouraged everyone to sign up on the donor registry, bethematch.org. She commented that bone marrow donors are very scarce, and especially for African-American women. She luckily had a sister who is a great match for her and she will be receiving that transplant soon. Be The Match announced that more than 11,000 have registered since Roberts encouragement, including many of the ABC News staff.

Roberts MDS is likely a result of the chemotherapy and radiation she received as treatment for cancer. Roberts overcame breast cancer almost 5 robin smilingyears ago.  Through all of this she has been a shining example of the fighter spirit and that laughter truly is the best medicine. She said it helps to have a sense of humor about life and the absurdity of it.

Almost exactly 5 years ago, Roberts underwent surgery to treat her breast cancer. She found the lump in her chest after doing a special on Joel Siegel, who courageously battled with cancer and was an advocate of early screenings. Roberts immediately made an appointment with a doctor and had her fears confirmed. It was cancer. Throughout all her struggle, Roberts was always in good spirits and stood out as a strong, courageous woman, an example to many.

Roberts said that during her struggle with breast cancer, the prayers and good wishes of those around her helped to sustain her and played a large role in her recovery process. She is again asking for prayers and love and support during this difficult time.
