Original ‘Steel Magnolias’ Producer Upset About Remake

Submitted by on October 5, 2012 – 2:19 pm Comments

Get ready for a tear jerker folks because A&E Network and Sony Pictures Television have collaborated on a TV movie based on the 1989 movie Steel Magnolias. I’m forever hearing people say things like “Movie producers are so unoriginal that they have to regurgitate and remake old movies”, now we know that it isn’t only movie producers that have no original thought left.

I get that a lot of new original shows and made for TV movies aren’t getting the ratings that the big wigs want to see and that giving the viewing public a remake of classic material is somehow comforting. Still isn’t variety the spice of life, or is it man can’t live by bread alone, well whatever the correct saying is for this situation, we need verity Hollywood.

Anyhow, the original Steel Magnolias movie (staring Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine to name a few) is a story of the friendship between a group of women living in a small parish in Louisiana. The movie is based on the play Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling who wrote the play based on his experience with the death of his sister. Most of the movie takes place in Truvy’s home-based beauty salon where the main characters come to get really big hair and stay up on the town gossip.

The woman hold each other up and help them through the hard times as well and celebrating the good ones. It is a beautiful sorry of Motherhood, friendship. There is nothing about this movie that I thought “well they could have changed that” or “I wish the movie had this”, but I guess I was wrong because what the movie was missing was an all black cast. At least that is what the producer Zadan and writer Harling thought.

Why stop there, why not remake other classics as well with an all African-American cast like oh I don’t know how about the King and I, or My Fair Lady. What does the change to an all black cast make in the movie that it didn’t have before? Nothing according to producer Craig Zadan as reported Wonderwall, “Harling’s words are essentially unchanged in the updated version, producers said, save for references to Facebook and Michelle Obama and some medical details that reflect advances in science.”

Huh, so there’s really no change to the movie other then the color of the actor’s and actress’s skin. So please remember the next time you are talking to your friends about Steel Magnolias, make sure you ask “is that the original one or the all black one?” otherwise there could be an awkward moment. ‘Steel Magnolias’ is to air on the Lifetime Network.
