McCartney Voluneteered His Time For Olympics

paul mccartney at concertSir Paul McCartney is one that commands a certain level of prowess and a certain wow factor, because of his Beatles past. He makes millions alone on just touring, so it would make sense he command a significant sum of money for the Olympics right?? Wrong! McCartney made (drum roll please) a whopping $1.57 (£1) for his contributions to the Olympic Games this year.

Amazingly enough he did not even expect that much money and had actually “volunteered” his time, however to make the contract legally binding he had to be paid something.  He did not mind waiving his usual fees, especially since the small fee is hardly the only thing he received for his performance opening night. He also received tickets to whatever Olympic event he wanted to see, and for McCartney that was great, he stated “I’m a big fan of athletics, when that’s on the TV, I don’t go out, so the Olympic Games are great for that for me.”

Was McCartney the only performer to agree to this deal? No, McCartney states, “They don’t pay you to perform, but what does happen is you get tickets to events, so they asked me what I would ideally like to go to, and so I sent a little list.”  It would sound like that would get expensive to offer every performer this kind of deal, but when you weigh the amount typically charged, £1 is a bargain. Not to mention seats for opening ceremonies cost about £2 012 per seat (that’s over $3100.)

It is refreshing to see that not all performers are solely money driven, and are happy to perform for next to nothing. Especially since and event like the Olympics is televised globally, like in my home they play as soon as my husband comes home. For McCartney and others who performed at opening ceremonies, they were proud to represent England in the “once in a lifetime opportunity.” Whatever their reason or motivation, for performing they made the opening ceremonies special, and inspired all the athletes competing for the coveted gold.
