May-Treanor and Walsh hugging after winMisty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh are making headlines everywhere. The unstoppable United States Beach Volleyball duo competed yesterday for the Women’s All-Around Finals against fellow American Jennifer Kessy and April Ross. This was the first time since 1996 that two teams from the same country have competed against each other for the honor of the gold medal. May-Treanor and Welsh made Olympic history when they won as they are the only pair to ever win three gold medals.

May-Treanor and Walsh won 2 sets, both 21-16. This does extend their Olympic winning streak to a total of 21 straight wins. The pair has also won three consecutive world championships.

When they scored that last point, the pair fell to the sand. Treanor even showed off some of her dance moves, and the duo hugged their opponents before running a victory lap around the Horse Guards Parade. They found their family, friends, and coaches in the stand to celebrate their win. Walsh wrapped herself and her two sons in the American flag. The two have been playing together for over 11 years now. It’s no wonder they have such chemistry.

Walsh could not believe they had actually won and even made the comment that if she woke up in the morning and had to play the match again, she was going to be furious. Apparently, making Olympic and world history made this Gold Medal win something different. “It didn’t feel like that the first two times for whatever reason,” said Walsh.

May-Treanor said the first two gold medals were all about the sport. Yes they had a friendship going, but it was more about volleyball. But this last medal was all about the friendship and togetherness. “Volleyball was just a small part of it.”

These two women have definitely changed over the past 8 years. In 2004, May-Treanor married current Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Matt Treanor in November of 2004 and the following year, Walsh and fellow volleyball player Casey Jennings wed. One the women won their second gold medals in 2008, Walsh decided it was time to start a family. She had her son Joseph in 2009 and her second son Sundance was born in 2010.

While Walsh was raising her kids, May-Treanor competed on “Dancing with the Stars” season seven with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She made it through the first two weeks of dancing, but had to leave the show after an injury. She had ruptured her Achilles tendon. She could not compete for a full year.

The pair reunited last year to have their last run at a gold medal. The eventually had to seek the help of sports psychologists to help them with their emotional and mental roadblocks. They had been used to not only winning, but dominating, and that wasn’t happening.

Misty May-Treanor will be retiring now, and it’s safe to say she couldn’t have ended on a higher note. She did make a similar statement after Beijing in 2008, but this time she is certain. The pair said they will remain close, that they are like sisters. Walsh said it best, “Above all, I’m just really proud to finish the journey with Misty how we finished it.”
