Major Crimes Renewed For Second Season

Submitted by on September 28, 2012 – 1:00 pm Comments

Many might have thought when ‘The Closer’ ended thanks to Kyra Sedgwick deciding to leave the show that, ‘Major Crimes’ is nothing more than a clever way to rehash ‘The Closer’ and present it like a fresh new show, minus Kyra. Although this might have initially been true, as most of the cast on the show with a few exceptions are still the same, Mary McDonnell replacing Kyra, did work wonders.

She basically managed to help us forget that, Kyra wasn’t ever coming back. In fact, the debut of Major Crimes saw 7 million viewers and its popularity, hasn’t waned since.  As an acknowledgement of its growing popularity, the show has been renewed for another season. “With Major Crimes, [co-creator] James Duff and his amazing production team have crafted an incredibly entertaining show that not only honours the spirit of The Closer, but also stands alone with its own voice and spirit,” said TNT’s Michael Wright. “We look forward to another season of this remarkable new drama”.

It also has to be mentioned that, the cases on the show have managed to remain as interesting as ever, but more importantly the approach to dealing with them has changed. Where Kyra’s character on the show Chief Brenda Johnson, was fine with twisting the law to her convenience in order to catch a criminal, Mary’s character of Sharon Raydor in Major Crimes, believes in doing everything by the book. Also, Brenda had a neurotic energy about her, and besides she always looked extremely flustered and on the edge. This in turn, helped her keep her team members on their toes.  Sharon on the other hand is the epitome of composure, with an inherent sense of calm. She in turn transfers her level of calm onto her team members, and also allows them their space to work.

Therefore, although the two shows might be similar, they feel like two completely different shows, thanks to the main characters on both the shows being diametrically opposite in nature. Another thing that probably worked in the show’s favor is the fact that, the character of Sharon Raydor was introduced in ‘The Closer’ in season 5, which gave the viewers enough time to get acquainted with the character.
