London Olympics 2012: All Eyes On Phelps

Submitted by on July 30, 2012 – 4:15 pm Comments

Michael Phelps competingMichael Phelps has proven to the world he is “The Flying Fish”, with 29 individual and 10 relay world records, 17 Olympic Medals (and counting) 14 of which are gold his accomplishments are plentiful.  Michael began swimming at age 7, influenced by his two sisters and as an outlet for his excess energy (caused by Attention Deficit Hyper-Activity Disorder.

At 10 he held the national record for his age group and that was only the beginning.  In 2000 at age 15 he became the youngest male swimmer for team USA something that had not been accomplished in 68 years, however he did not get a medal and finished in 5th place over all. More recently in 2008 he brought home the more gold than any other Olympian. Anyone would be crazy to say he’s not impressive.

Currently all eyes are on London and swim fans are biting their nails watching Phelps and the rest of Team USA Swim compete. With Gold won by Ryan Lochte in the 400 Individual Medley, Peter Vanderkaay picking up the Bronze for the 400 Freestyle, Brendan Hansen taking a Bronze for the US in Breast Stroke, and a Silver Medal last night for the 4×100 Freestyle (Men’s), the pressure is on and the competition is fierce.

One this is for sure, since Phelps missed out on the medal for the 400m individual medley, you can be certain, that he is going to bring it today for the 200m Butterfly, which is his best event, and also  an event he has held the world record in since 2001.

Phelps has set the bar pretty high for himself in the Beijing Olympics, and thus far has yet to bring home the gold, but he remains positive. Phelps positive attitude will prove to be a great asset, especially in a competition as vast as the Olympics. Currently as of 8:00am PST China is in 1st place with 6 Gold, 4 Silver, and 2 Bronze, with a 12 medal grand total. The US is 2nd with 3 Gold, 5 Silver, and 4 Gold and also has 12 total.  Italy takes 3rd with 2 Gold, 4 Silver, and 2 Bronze, totaling 8.
