LeVar Burton of ‘Reading Rainbow’ Mad At PBS Attack At Debate

Submitted by on October 4, 2012 – 2:10 pm Comments

Without getting into politics or anything, but the comments that Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney made about cutting funding to PBS has incited a lot of hate mail that is surely going to be going to his secretary’s email account. One in particular is Levar Burton. The host of the popular Children Education program ‘Reading Rainbow’ is upset by it the most.

LeVar told TMZ that “I am personally outraged that any serious contender for the White House would target as part of his campaign the children of America in this fashion. Educators across the country, as well as millions of children and adults know that the programming on PBS has been responsible for significant improvements in education, literacy, math, science and life skills for generations of our children.” PBS currently represents .00016% of the budget. However, many, if not all, feel that this is an education cost that benefits America.

The PBS big wigs managed to stay quiet on this, but LeVar needed to speak out on the comments that were made. Granted, Romney may have said that he loves Big Bird, but if they cut PBS, then that bird is good as cooked. Taking this as an attack on America’s Children, already they have gained followers to the hate the comments made by Romney.

Some feel that this is Romney’s point and that it is attacking the middle class and less fortunate of America. In any event, there are many programs out there that should be cut, but going after the children is just wrong. No word yet on what PBS owners have said regarding the comments, but it is sure to be seen that there is going to be a little bit of a backlash from this.

Many have grown up with and continue to have their children grow with shows like ‘Sesame Street’ and ‘Reading Rainbow’ and feel that it would be a mistake to cut any of the money given to them. However, last time I checked, PBS stands for the People’s Broadcasting System and therefore if the people want it to stay, then they will make it stay.
