Kenan & Kel Reunion Impossible

Submitted by on November 26, 2012 – 12:06 pm Comments

Don’t count on ever seeing the Kenan and Kel reunion you always hoped for — because Kel Mitchell told  TMZ, Kenan’s dropped him like a hot potato and is actively avoiding him. Kel was basically quoted as saying, “The truth is Kenan does not want to be seen with me in any form of media, or even have my name mentioned around him”. Kel hasn’t exactly seen his star rise the way SNL star Kenan has, but what could have gone down between them to make them hate each other so much?

For the uninitiated, Kenan and Kel was a teen comedy sitcom produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions that originally aired on Nickelodeon from July 1996 to July 2000. The show starred friends and then-All That cast members Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. Sixty-five episodes and a made-for-TV movie were produced over four seasons. The first two seasons were filmed at Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, Florida, and the remaining two were filmed at the Nick On Sunset Theater in Hollywood.

The show was set in Chicago, Illinois, and centered on the antics of two mischievous teenagers, Kenan Rockmore (Thompson) and Kel Kimble (Mitchell). Kenan is a high school student with a job at a local grocery store, while Kel is his clumsy, orange soda-loving best friend. Episodes of the series always opened and closed with Kenan and Kel breaking the fourth wall by interacting with the studio audience, standing in front of a red curtain that is placed in front of the main set, while still in character. A frequent running gag of the openings would be Kel never knowing what the night’s episode would be about and Kenan refusing to tell him. The closings would frequently feature Kenan coming up with a new scheme – often asking Kel to get various assorted items and meet him somewhere. Frazzled, Kel would exclaim his catchphrase, “Aww, here it goes!”

Currently there are no DVD releases of Kenan & Kel despite a large number of fans requesting it. Interestingly, the producers, creators and writers of All That decided to give Kenan and Kel their own show after noticing how much chemistry there was between the two teenagers. Kenan Thompson does an impression of Bill Cosby on occasion in the series. Years later when Thompson joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, he would also do impressions of Cosby on that series as well.
