Jimmy Fallon Will Not Be Hosting the Oscars

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin Hosting the oscarsJimmy Fallon has been the subject of talk recently. The “Late Night” host was rumored to be in the running as the host of the 2013 Academy Awards. He admitted Wednesday that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had asked him if he’d be interested in the gig. Apparently not.

During an Olympic broadcast today, Fallon spoke with Matt Lauer on the subject. Fallon stated that it was an honor to even be considered but that it’s not his year. Rumors started to spread last week when it was announced that Lorne Michaels, producer of “Saturday Night Live” would be producing the telecast. Though Michaels is Fallon’s former boss, there is a bit of a conflict for the “Late Night” host. Oscar network ABC is the home of Fallon’s competition, Jimmy Kimmel.

Lauer seemed visibly disappointed by the announcement. He ended the segment by stating “That wasn’t quite the note I was hoping to end on.” You’re not the only one Matt! There are tons of Fallon fans who would love to see the former SNL cast member host the Oscars. In fact, there were tons of positive reviews of his job as host of the 2010 Emmy’s and he reportedly was able to draw in more of the younger viewers, which the Oscars have been struggling to do in recent years.Jimmy fallon in tux

Some have said the main reason Fallon is no longer a consideration for host belongs to issues of the ABC executives and Disney Chief Executive, Bob Iger. Though Iger doesn’t want Fallon as host, he would still like to have Michaels produce the show. We all know how talented Michaels is at producing a live show.

The Oscars have often hired hosts from other networks though. Johnny Carson hosted the award show numerous times during the late 70′s and early 80′s. Jon Stewart of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show” hosted in both ’06 and ’08. Alec Baldwin, star of NBC’s “30 Rock” has even co-hosted in 2010 with Steve Martin.

Apparently the majority of the Oscar’s audience is getting older each year and the show is trying to attract a much younger crowd. Who they end up choosing to host may not matter. Some reports show that Oscar ratings are affected much more by the popularity of the films nominated, not so much who hosts.

Hopefully, the Academy Awards will be able to find a host who can please the entire audience, both old and young. All that people want is something that is entertaining. The perfect host is out there, they just need to find him or her.
