Jay Leno’s Tonight Show, Barely Managing To Stay Afloat

Submitted by on August 28, 2012 – 6:00 pm Comments

The Tonight Show has been NBC’s cash cow for years; therefore it was surprising for everyone when it was revealed that, NBC is barely managing to break even with this show. This has in turn led to layoffs, which is a bane of an economy which is moving at a snail’s pace, if it’s moving at all. Leno as a matter of fact is said to be doing as much as he can to help out. He in fact offered to work for free, in order to tide over this bad phase, but the executives at NBC shot down his offer, as they were afraid it would set a bad precedent. Eventually, Leno took a 10% pay cut in his pay, despite which he shall be taking home a handsome salary. The 10% pay cut might just help save a few jobs though.

The show is basically suffering from a bad case of poor ratings. The blame for this could be placed on anything from people wanting to watch O’Brien and John Stewart, to the show having run its course and thus stagnating. Whatever the reason might be, it is something of a worry for both Leno and the studio. Also, calling curtains on the show would greatly affect the prestige of NBC, as the Tonight Show is its flagship.

On the other hand, for Leno too it’s a matter of prestige, as he is himself a veteran and would surely like to avoid the ignominy of having to be laid off or replaced by the network. The end of the Tonight Show would basically spell doom for Leno’s career, as he possibly wouldn’t get the kind of importance and enjoy the kind of clout that, he commands at NBC.

His desperation can be well gauged by his proposal whereby he was ready to forgo his salary, just so that the show can go on. This, more than an act of magnanimity, was an act of self preservation. It can eventually be argued that, the Tonight Show is simply going through a bad patch and is merely reflecting the slowdown, which has gripped everything. In the future things might look up and the detractors of the show might have to end up eating their words.
