Doctor WhoFor half a century Doctor Who has managed to rule the hearts of viewers, world over, no doubt he has stuck around for so long. This year is the 50th anniversary of the show and therefore fans of the show are naturally expecting something special from its makers. There are rumors flying all over the place about how the 50th year will be celebrated. The Doctor Who Magazine has thrown up a few clues. According to the magazine there will only be one anniversary episode which shall begin filming in April, alongside the Mark Gatiss docu-drama An Adventure in Space and Time. The docu-drama would begin filming in the next month or two it seems. Also, there are rumors that David Tennant the 10th Doctor might return for the anniversary special. What the format of the anniversary shall be is yet to be confirmed. Matt Smith had in fact suggested that there is a possibility of multiple episodes, but recent rumors hint otherwise. It seems there might be a feature-length outing instead.

As far as the rumors about a multi-Doctor series is concerned Moffat the writer of the show was quoted as saying “It’s slightly difficult to do them all now. I’m not against it but I think as a gimmick it outlives its usefulness quite fast. “Doing Time Crash with 8 minutes of Peter [Davidson] and David [Tennant] was about right. If you have a really good story that motors on the fact that this is one man experiencing the same adventure at several different points of his life, that would be worth doing. But you can’t do a special or an episode as a reunion party. That’s not a story, that’s a party. Nothing wrong with parties but they’re not great fun to watch. But with a really good story, then yes”. So he is neither ruling out nor confirming a multi-Doctor series.

Matt Smith on his part was quoted as saying “It won’t just be a televised event, I think it will be a live event. The way it’s transmitted on Doctor Who AnniversaryTV will hopefully be an inventive thing–something different.” When previous doctors were asked if they would like to be involved, they all gave a mixed bag of answers; some were open to the idea whilst others weren’t too keen on it. It was the same with the partners; some were ready to return whilst others said a straight out no. Although there are strong rumors according to the Express that Carole Ann Ford will return as Susan Foreman.

As far as the monsters and villains are concerned Moffat was quoted as saying “One thing I’m slightly concerned about is that you get something like the 50, people start talking like it’s a full stop. I want to build for the future. I want to set up the next 50 years and to say: ‘Here are the new monsters we’re introducing.’ Rather than doing something which might seem like a farewell tour, because it certainly is not.” Which means we might not see too many of the old monsters or villains returning. The Express had claimed that Master will be back, but the role shall be essayed by Benedict Cumberbatch. But, Cumberbatch and Moffat later denied it. Moffat clarified that John Simm is still the Master.
