“bIg TiNy” Coming to TLC

Another new show I will happily watch on TLC starting next week on the 13th is Big Tiny. It will follow the world’s smallest siblings Bri and Brad Jordan.  Older sister Bri is 23, weighs in at a whopping 18lbs and clocks in at 27 inches tall, while her younger brother is 21, he is 35lbs and 38 inches tall. According to the series description “They make something big out of being tiny.”

By now you are likely wondering, but why are they so tiny?  Well I am going to fill you in. Both have a condition known as Osteodysplastic Primordial Dwarfism, Type II, according to Wikipedia this means that “those who have ODPDII often have further medical issues than the other types such as a squeaky voice, microdontia, widely spaced primary teeth, poor sleep patterns (in early years), delayed mental development, frequent sickness, breathing problems, eating problems, hyperactivity, farsightedness, brain aneurysms, and do not respond to hormone therapy because primordial dwarfism is not caused by a lack of any growth hormone. After reviewing x-rays it is also found that many have dislocated joints, scoliosis, and delayed bone age as well as microcephaly. They will not reach the size of an average newborn until they are between the ages of 3-5.”

However do not think that just because they have a rare disease that this is going to be a sad show that no one is going to want to watch. That will not be the case, Yes there will be challenges for them but they are vivacious, athletic, and just overall amazing little people with big personalities. It is inspiring because they have never let their height hinder them, Brad does karate and is a cheerleader, while his sister bakes and likes to hang out with her friends.

I find it a great thing to see shows on TLC that will actually make you think and even change the way you think about people especially since right now they and other networks show you plenty of other shows that just make you think “Really What the Hell”. Being the mother a of a child with special needs, it is important to me to show people to see more than just the disability or the handicap, and look deeper than what you see on the surface. Osteodysplastic Primordial Dwarfism, Type II is what they have NOT who they are.
