‘Alphas’ Ryan Cartwright Roped In For ‘Big Bang Theory’

Big Bang Theory is all set to see a new guest star in the form of Ryan Cartwright, from the TV show Alphas. The actor will play a student named Cole, who befriends Penny (Kaley Cuoco) after she goes back to college later this season. Cartwright shall first appear on the 15th Nov episode of the show. Reportedly, he might be a threat for Penny’s boyfriend Leonard (Johnny Galecki).

Cartwright has signed up to guest star in the show, but it is not currently confirmed whether he will have a recurring role in the season. Probably it will depend on how well his character is received by the audiences. Speaking about Penny’s return to college, producer Steve Molaro said: “She’s an aspiring actress and she’s been here for four or five years now and got that one commercial but nothing huge happened. We would like to see more for Penny and I think that’s something where we’re all thinking about and discussing, whether it’s on the acting side or some other avenue. We definitely would like to expand Penny’s life”.

It makes sense for Penny to concentrate on academics given that she is surrounded by geniuses on the show. Also, now that she is dating Leonard, she probably wants to feel smart too, something that isn’t really possible given her community college education and Sheldon’s constant taunt about her education. Cartwright on his part is a British actor who has acted on TV shows like Bones, Madmen and most recently Alphas. On Alphas, he plays the character of Gary Bell a highly functioning autistic with an ability to process information that rivals most computers.

Alphas is basically a sci-fi drama in which, Dr. Lee Rosen leads a team of “Alphas”, (human beings with enhanced abilities) who investigate the death of a witness in a court case. They soon uncover more than they had bargained for. It would be interesting to see how Cartwright adapts himself in a show like Big Bang Theory which is humorous, as opposed to more serious shows that he has acted in, up until now. It would also be interesting to see if he manages to woo Penny.
