“Abby And Brittany” Coming To TLC

Submitted by on August 8, 2012 – 6:02 pm Comments

Almost everyone has seen Abby and Brittany Hensel at one time or another in their life via specials on TLC, Discovery Channel, and other networks. Well I am actually happy to report that they are coming back to TLC and getting their own series. Though this show we will see them in their day to day life, their graduation from Bethel University in Minnesota, their trip through Europe and their post grad job search.

For those that do not know who Abby and Brittany are, they are dicephalic parapagus twin girls, meaning that they are conjoined twins of whom each has a separate head, but their bodies are joined. They both have their own heart, lungs, spine, stomach, and spinal cord. However they have their own half of their body, Abby cannot feel Brittany’s half of their body and vice versa. Both girls work together to control her half of their body, operating one of the arms and one of the legs. This means that as infants, the initial learning of physical processes that required bodily coordination, such as clapping, crawling, and walking required the cooperation of both girls. While each is able to eat and write separately and simultaneously, they have to work together for activities such as running and swimming. Other activities as diverse as brushing hair and driving a car require that each girl perform a sequence of separate actions that coordinate with the others movement.

They first gained popularity in 1996 when they were on Oprah; they were only 6 years old back then. However despite sporadic appearances they have managed to live a normal life with their family in Minnesota. In 2006 the girls appeared in a special on TLC called “Joined For Life: Abby and Brittany Turn 16” In this episode they talked about getting their drivers licenses, plans for the future, and your typical teenage girl stuff, which I always thought was cool because they are only two years younger than me.

Personally I see them as inspirational, because from the day they were born they have had all sorts of obstacles in their path and they still to this day show us what they are capable of. They have two different personalities yet they work together every day and not always because they have to, but because they want to. They are sisters, and even though I am sure like most sisters, they fight, but unlike the rest of us they have no choice but to deal with whatever issues may arise, where as some of us would just walk away and leave, because it is so easy for us to do.

Their self-titled show, airs August 28th at 10pm on TLC and will also answer allot of the questions most people think of when they think of conjoined twins and hopefully once and for all prove to people that Abby and Brittany are really not as “different” from most 22 year olds as everyone assumes. If anyone deserves to have their own show they do.
