Johnny Depp Becomes Honorary Comanche Indian!
I have always enjoyed Johnny Depp’s movies and don’t want any diehard fans on me for saying so, but what the heck is with Depp becoming an honorary member of the Comanche Indian tribe! TMZ sites that it’s “Partly due to the fact he is playing Tonto in the upcoming “Lone Ranger” movie”. What! Is he also an honorary Pirate for his portrayal as Jack Sparrow, or an official vampire for his most recent work on “Dark Shadows”? No!
Tonto’s character has widely been seen by Native Americans and others as degrading. With his simplified or “broken” form of speaking “That right, Kemo Sabe” or “Him say man ride over ridge on horse.” It’s no wonder Native American’s were insulted. To make it even worse the word tonto means “fool” or “dumb” in Portuguese, Italian and Spanish.
Johnny Depp has had a very lucrative movie career starting in 1984 with A Nightmare on Elm Street; he has gone on to make over 50 movies and TV show appearances. In 2004, Depp started his production company Infinitum Nihil. So far it has produced The Rum Diary, Hugo and Dark Shadows. I haven’t even mentioned his numerous musical appearances collaborations because frankly there are just too many. There is no doubt he is a very talented and enterprising man, not to mention he is gorgeous and pushing 50.

So my question is this. What has Johnny Depp done for the Comanche Indian tribe other then star in a roll that has stereotyped Native American’s in a very negative light? However funny and enjoyable the movie will I’m sure be and despite that Johnny Depp will be wonderful in the role totally endearing himself to his fans even more, is that worthy of becoming an honorary tribe member?
Apparently so, after some exhausting internet research ( Wikipedia) I learned that Depp had in fact been adopted on May 22, 2012 by LaDonna Harris ironically president of Americans for Indian Opportunity. Really adopted, He’s a grown man for craps sakes! Anyway this makes Depp a member of Harris’s family and an honorary member of the Comanche tribe to boot. Wow, just think how awesome the next Harris family reunion will be!
