Tobey Maguire Dropped From Life Of Pi

Submitted by on September 6, 2012 – 12:00 pm Comments

It’s safe to say that, Tobey Maguire was possibly the biggest name on Life of Pi. But it was possibly for the best that he was cut from this movie. The reason simply being, he had what can be called a miniscule role in the film. “To be consistent with the other casting choices made for the film, I decided to go with an entirely international cast,” said Lee, aptly explaining his decision.

On the flipside it can also be argued that Tobey’s name being connected with the film would probably have helped in a big way in the movie’s publicity. But it probably already has, as Life of Pi would be labeled as the movie from which a big name like Tobey Maguire was omitted. Obviously, Ang Lee’s is a name big enough for the movie to become a huge success.

Tobey on his part, was gracious in his ousting “I fully support Ang’s decision to go a different direction for this role in Life of Pi,” he said. “Ang shared a lot of the film with me, and what I saw was absolutely beautiful” he added, commending how the movie has shaped up. Lee has reportedly reshot Maguire’s scenes with Rafe Spall, who was recently seen in the movie Prometheus. It goes without saying that, Spall isn’t in the same league as Tobey ‘Spiderman’ Maguire, when it comes to star power, and the role Spall has in this movie, surely wouldn’t do much to enhance it.

One must say; losing out on this movie isn’t really a big deal as far as Tobey is concerned. He has many more lined up, one of which is the highly anticipated Great Gatsby, where he shall star alongside Lenardo Di Caprio. Releasing in 2013, this is one movie that is really being looked forward to. What is interesting to note though is fact that, Ang Lee took so very long to realize, Tobey wasn’t really the right fit for his movie, especially since Lee had already shot a few scenes with him. Therefore one can’t really help but think there is more to this whole story, than meets the eye.
