The Producer Of ‘Innocence Of Muslims’ Arrested
It was only a matter of time before 55-year-old Nakoula Basseley Nakoula was arrested. It at last has happened. He was arrested today in California on a probation violation stemming from a 2010 check fraud conviction, for which he served a year in prison. You might think the case has nothing to do with ‘Innocence of Muslims’, but there is more. Under the terms of his probation, Nakoula was banned from using computers and the Internet for 5 years without prior approval. But as we all know, ‘Innocence of Muslims’ first gained its notoriety thanks to YouTube.
In other words, he used a computer and in turn also used the internet, thus violating the probation of which only 2 years are up. In fact, a judge has ordered that, Nakoula be jailed for the violation. Under a normal circumstance the judge probably wouldn’t have been so harsh, but Nakoula’s using a computer and the internet has had such repercussions that he probably deserved nothing less. Also, it was a clever way of teaching the man a lesson for making such an inflammatory film, as he possibly couldn’t have been convicted on US soil for the film itself, as it would have probably infringed upon his freedom of expression.

‘Innocence of Muslims’ is basically an anti-Islam video, reported to have been written and produced by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, using the pseudonym of “Sam Bacile”. While he initially denied being the controversial figure, records uncovered by the Associated Press and confirmed by American federal authorities established Nakoula as the same person as Sam Bacile. Nakoula had earlier also claimed that he was creating an epic, two hour film, however no such film has been located.
In addition, prosecutors have stated that some of the probation violations included making false statements regarding his role in the film and his use of the alias “Sam Bacile”. The backlash as a result of the video being uploaded on the internet was widespread. There were violent protests world over, and especially in the Muslim world. In the US, protesters gathered in the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn on September 22. The protest did not only condemn the film but also the extreme response in the Muslim world.
