THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWEREmma Watson was on “Live with Kelly and Michael” today promoting her latest film “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” The film was written and directed by Stephen Chbosky and is an adaptation of his 1999 best selling book. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival but does not hit theaters until September 21st.

The center of the story is a boy named Charlie who is a high school freshman. The role of Charly is played by Logan Lerman, the 20 year old star of the “Percy Jackson” films. Mae Whitman (24 years old), Johnny Simmons (26 years old), and Emma Watson (22 years old) play some of the seniors at school who either befriend Charlie or torment him. Watson is shedding her “Hermione” self to play the role of Sam, a senior girl in Pittsburgh who acts as referee between Charlie and Sam’s fellow senior, Patrick (who is played by Ezra Miller who is 19 years old.)

Charlie is a very tender soul who is raw after the sudden death of his best friend Michael who shot himself and the death of his beloved Aunt Helen (seen in flashbacks played by Melanie Lynskey) who died in a car crash. Charlie’s very first day of high school he is immediately shunned by the rest of the student body. Even at lunch, Charlie is forced to sit all alone. Finally in shop class, Charlie meets Patrick who has been forced to repeat the class until he passes. Patrick allows Charlie to join his pack, what he calls “the Island of Misfit Toys.” The group also includes Sam and two other girls, Mary Elizabeth (played by Whitman) and Alice (who is played by Erin Wilhelmi.) The small group can see that there is a catch to Charlie, but no one else at the school can seem to spot it.

There is a bit of a love triangle when Mary Elizabeth is named as Charlie’s girlfriend, but when he’s dared to kiss who it is he likes the most, he kisses Sam. It is also a bit heart breaking when Patrick is beat up by the jocks after the word spreads of his gay relationship with the football star Brad (played by Simmons.)THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER

Emma Watson spoke on her role in the film and said that she hopes that “Harry Potter” fans will be able to see her transformation and that they will see that there are other sides to her they have yet to see. She said it was very different for her to play an American role but many have said that they forget it’s her they are watching when they see the film. She said that is a success in itself for her.

The film will have a limited release on September 21st and then will be released everywhere on September 28th.
