jennifer lawrence holding bow“The Hunger Games” DVD and Blu-ray was released over the weekend, and has made some records numbers since. The action film sold a whopping 3.8 million DVDs and Blu-rays in just its first weekend of release. Lionsgate announced these numbers yesterday. This puts the “The Hunger Games” right up there with “Twilight.”

The most recent vampire film, “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ only sold 3.2 million units when it was released last February, and the third film, “Eclipse,” sold only 2.7 million during its first weekend of release. The first “Twilight” did however sell 3.8 million and its sequel, “New Moon” sold a total of 4 million units during its first weekend. The blockbuster hit “Avatar” had over 5.2 million sales of DVDs and Blu-rays in its first two days alone, later setting a record of 6.7 million units sold after only four days on the shelves.

But still, “The Hunger Games” reached blockbuster numbers which is not an easy task in an age where streaming services like that of Netflix have really changed the home entertainment industry. But “The Hunger Games” also broke records on the digital platforms as well.

Lionsgate stated that the film was its largest digital and on-demand launch in their history. “The Hunger Games” also generated the largest first day sales of any title on Xbox’s Zune Video. It also had the biggest first day sales on Comcast of any film in over 4 years, not to mention that it cast of hunger games talkinghad the biggest selling day on iTunes in the history of Lionsgate.

“The Hunger Games” has earned over $684 million worldwide at the box office so far. The sequel “Catching Fire” is set to hit theaters November 2013 and fans cannot wait.  Very few of the stars of the film recognized the impact that the film would have on pop culture. The movie which is based on the best selling sci-fi novels by Suzanne Collins became box office hits this past March.

The films show a rebellious teen, Katniss Everdeen played by Jennifer Lawrence, in a battle to the death that is televised by the decree of the government. Throughout the battle, Katniss unknowingly becomes a beacon of hope to the people.

Lionsgate Executive Vice President and the General Manager of Home Entertainment, Ron Schwartz said that film is the “motion picture event of the year and is translating into a home entertainment juggernaut that is already setting new digital records and demonstrating sustained playability similar to the film’s remarkable long-term box office performance.” They are very pleased that over a third of the units sold in its first weekend on the shelves were in Blu-ray format, which is a very high percentage.
