Sean Penn To Star In Film Adaptation Of ‘Prone Gunman’

Well, off late we are seeing some of the oldies of Hollywood star in some kick-ass actions films. The best part is, not only are they starring in them, but actually making those movies look good. Therefore taking a cue from, Stallone, Bruce Willis and Liam Neeson, Sean Penn too has decided to join the bandwagon. Sean Penn, 52, looks set to emerge as an unlikely Bourne-style fugitive in a new thriller being tipped as the first in a franchise. Basically, Penn is in talks to star in Prone Gunman as an international operative named Martin Terrier. He’s betrayed by the organization he works for and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat and mouse across Europe.

The movie is based on a novel written by Jean-Patrick Manchette, who was a French crime novelist credited with reinventing and reinvigorating the genre. He wrote ten short novels in the seventies and early eighties. His stories are violent, existentialist explorations of the human condition and French society. Manchette was politically to the left and his writing reflects this through his analysis of social positions and culture.

Prone Gunman is based on Manchette’s The Prone Gunman, one of only three novels by the Frenchman translated into English. The project is being financed by StudioCanal and is currently searching for a director to work from Peter Travis’s screenplay. Sean Penn on his part shall in 2013 be seen in a movie called ‘Gangster Squad’. The movie is a chronicle of the LAPD’s fight to keep East Coast Mafia types out of Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s.

Accompanying him in the film would be Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling besides others. The film was originally slated for an early September, 2012 release date but ended up getting bumped until January of 2013 so some additional scenes could be filmed. Coming back to the Prone Gunman, it would be interesting to see someone with Sean Penn’s acting talent and age, play a Jason Bourne like character. Surely, he would bring something really unique and breathtaking to the table. Here’s hoping the movie hits the floors, real soon.
