‘Robocalypse’ Status Revealed By Spielberg

Steven SpielbergJust recently it was revealed that Steven Spielberg’s Robocalypse has been delayed indefinitely. It is news that might have disappointed many fans, as it was touted to be a really huge film and when Spielberg handles a huge film we all know how it turns out. It was actually reported that the movie is too huge and too expensive to make and is hence delayed indefinitely. Spielberg probably read these reports and therefore decided to clear the air about what the exact status of Robocalypse is. “We found that the film was costing a lot of money and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally” said Spielberg. Well, from his quote it can clearly be surmised that the movie is going to be made, albeit not in the grand scale that it was touted to be made earlier.

Staking hundreds of millions for making a film is a risk that even legendary filmmakers like Spielberg don’t want to take, at times. Therefore many filmmakers feel, to mitigate the risk it is always better to scale down the budget, rather than not make the film at all. That way the filmmaker gets to make the movie he wants to make and the studio doesn’t have to worry itself sick about whether the film will make enough money to recover the costs.

Coming back to Robocalypse, Spielberg was further quoted as saying “I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I Robocalypsejust told everybody to go find other jobs. I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon”. Seems like it is back to the drawing board for Robocalype, which means it would be some time before the movie sees the light of the day.

Let us hope that we as an audience weren’t deprived of an unforgettable cinematic experience only because it didn’t fit the budget. In other words, let us hope that the reworked or rather the scaled down version of Robocalypse manages to excite us the same way Spielberg had thought the original script would. In retrospect, one can’t help but have  a fair amount of faith that a reworked Robocalypse would still hit the mark, after all the great Steven Spielberg is involved with the project and more often than not, he manages to hit the bulls eye.
