Robert Rodriguez Contemplating Fourth ‘Mariachi’ Film With Antonio Banderas
When one hears the word ‘Mariachi’ Antonio Banderas in the film Desparado immediately flashes in front one’s eyes and with good reason. It was Robert Rodriguez who created this image of Antonio Banderas by casting him in his film Desperado and its sequel Once Upon a Time in Mexico. The prequel to the two films was a film in Mexican named ‘El Mariachi’, and it has been 20 years since its release. To mark the occasion the director hosted a screening of the film. It was during this occasion that he also spoke and revealed details about the possible future of this franchise.
He revealed how he and Banderas recently spoke about how much fun they had while making Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, this led to them discussing how great it would be to make another film in the franchise. ”We forgot about how much fun we’ve had together. We decided we have to do something. We want to do another ‘El Mariachi’ movie at some point. We always said we would, but [we'd shoot it] much later when he’s older and rounder” Rodriguez was quoted as saying.

But, the problem ironically is that Banderas despite his advancing age is still in a great shape instead of being “older
and rounder”, which is proving to be an impediment in the project moving forward. “We have to figure something else out, because he’s in better shape now than he ever was” Rodriguez was quoted as saying elaborating on the issue, in taking the plans for a new film forward. Banderas shall soon be seen in Rodriguez’s forthcoming release ‘Machete Kills’. He basically has a cameo in it. But, for all you fans out there hoping to see him as El Mariachi in ‘Machete Kills’, be prepared to be disappointed as he isn’t playing El Mariachi in the film.
It seems like we shall only get to see Antonio Banderas as El Mariachi, if he ever decides to gain weight. For those unaware, El Mariachi the character was basically a travelling Mariachi, a musician, who just wanted to play his guitar and carry on the family tradition. But, he was mistaken for a killer who carries a gun in his guitar case. As a result of this he was chased by dangerous criminals, who wanted to kill him. With his back against the wall, he had no option but to fight back.
