‘Poltergeist’ Remake To Be Directed By Sam Raimi

Submitted by on October 18, 2012 – 11:00 am Comments

We all know Sam Raimi is somewhat of an expert when it comes to directing horror films. After all, he has the Evil Dead franchise and ‘Drag me to Hell’ under his belt. Therefore it isn’t surprising; he has been chosen to helm the remake of ‘Poltergeist’. In a ‘Rise Of The Guardians’ interview, writer Lindsay-Abaire confirmed that Raimi was directing Poltergeist. Raimi and MGM though, haven’t yet confirmed this news, and till they do, it really can’t be called official.

For fans of Raimi this can be nothing short of good news if Raimi actually goes ahead and directs the film. For those unaware, Raimi is one of the producers of the remake, but up until now there was no news of him directing the film. But this recent revelation can be called nothing short, of a breath of fresh air. The original ‘Poltergeist’ released in 1982, had Steven Spielberg as one of the writers and was directed by Tobe Hooper. The story is of a family who, are visited by ghosts in their home. At first the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, then they turn nasty and start to terrorize the family before they “kidnap” the youngest daughter.

The treatment of the film and the special effects used were absolutely breathtaking for its time. But, Sam Raimi has his own style and way of doing things; therefore he would surely not indulge in a typical remake, where he simply joins the dots by copying scenes from the original. He would probably keep the basic plotline the same and then play around with the treatment of the film.

Also, 30 years have passed since the original was made, technology has advanced in leaps and bounds since then, and therefore you can imagine how much playing around Raimi can do with this film, especially when it comes to the special effects. On the other hand, Lindsay-Abaire and Raimi’s next collaboration, Oz: The Great And Powerful, opens in the UK on 8 March 2013. Raimi at the moment must be too preoccupied with that, and probably doesn’t have the time to think about the remake. Therefore an official announcement might still have to wait.
