Natasha Calis On Her Latest Film, The Possession

Submitted by on August 29, 2012 – 9:34 am Comments

Natasha CalisNatasha Calis admitted that she tried to watch one of the scariest movies of all time, “The Exorcist,” on her own when she was 9 years old. She stated that she made it almost a quarter of the way through, and said that she was scared to death. The 13 year old Canadian actress is attempting to do the exact same thing to anyone who attempts to watch her new film “The Possession” which hits theaters Friday.

Similar to the 1973′s “The Exorcist”, which was based on the William Peter Blatty book that was inspired by real 1949 events in Maryland, “The Possession” is based on an article from the Los Angeles Times back in 2004 about the eBay sale of a Jewish dibbuk box that was reported haunted.

The film was directed by the Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal and coproduced by the scary film pro Sam Raimi, who is best known for his work on “The Evil Dead.” Calis stars in the film as Em, the youngest daughter of a divorced couple, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick. She soon becomes obsessed with an antique wooden box that she gets at a yard sale.

Once she brings the box home, strange things begin to happen. Her parents try to figure out just what is wrong with her while the evil that was in the box tries to take over the little girl. In one scene, Em is turned into a monster chewing on raw meat. She then leaps at her mom, to either attack her or find comfort. The Possession

Morgan said he does not care for today’s horror films, and that he feels they are “a lot of no-story, shaky camera, found footage” movies. Though he was previously a skeptic, Morgan tried to open himself up to the possibility of truth in the story. At one point, there was some discussion about bringing the real dibbuk box from the article to the film set. Morgan refused, saying “on the off chance that this is a thing that could happen and be real, I don’t want it near me.”

Bornedal used much of the same tactics with Calis that the director of “The Exorcist” used with Linda Blair. The set became one big playground. They would have three minutes of silence prior to each scene for Calis to get into character. Then, as soon as they yelled cut, she would get some candy and head off to school. She said she would basically switch it on and off.

The scene that scared Calis the most, was when she had to have 2,000 moths dumped on her. She said they were crawling in her pajamas and that she was alone in a dark room. She said once they got all the moths off of her and she was able to show, she though it had been fun and was ready for round 2.

“Possession” will open in theaters Friday, August 31st. See the Trailer Below!
