Michael keatonIt was just announced this morning that Michael Keaton will be joinging the cast of “Robocop.” Keaton will be playing the villain in the remake. Originally, the role was being written for none other than the “House” star, Hugh Laurie.

“Robocop” which is set to release to theaters August 9th, 2013, will be directed by Jose Padilha, who directed the likes of “Elite Squad.” Joel Kinnaman will be starring as Alex Murphy or Robocop. Also starring in the film is Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Jackie Earle Haley, Abbie Cornish, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michael K. Williams, and Jennifer Ehle.

Keaton will be playing Raymond Sellars, who is the evil and insanely rich CEO of Omnicorp. The film is set in 2029 and Omnicorp is at the very center of robot technology. Because their drones are so successful in American wars all over the world, there is a desire to bring that technology home to the states.

Alex Murphy is a father and husband just trying to do his best as he works as a cop in the crime filled, corrupt city of Detroit. After being critically injured on the job, Omnicorp uses their science in robotics to save Alex’s life. He then returns to the line of duty with new abilities and skills, only now, there are new trials and issues that no normal man has ever had to face prior to him.

Padilha released a statement saying that “Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film, and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place.” He also stated that it is thrilling how everything is finally coming together for this new vision of Robocop. With all the new technology Padilha has at his disposal, the film has the ability to be amazing. “We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209s, and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets.

Though Padilha is very excited about the new film, there are some who are not quite as thrilled at the “Robocop” remake.Robocop

Writer Drew McWeeny was able to read an early draft of the “Robocop” script, which was co-written by Joshua Zetumer and Nick Schenk, and took to twitter to voice his dissatisfaction.  ”I tried to read the “Robocop” remake, but 20 pages in my nose started bleeding and I forgot my name.”He then went on to share a few more details of the plot of the remake.

The script may still be just a work in progress, but Kinnaman recently stated that Padilha is an amazing director and one to look out for, even going so far as to call him a young master and strong visionary. Padilha really wants to make a film with substance, and that’s just what he will attempt to do here with “Robocop.”
