Kenneth Branagh CinderellaFor those of you who were looking forward to Disney’s film Cinderella, but had thought the movie had been shelved, are in for a pleasant surprise. Turns out, Disney has roped in Kenneth Branagh to direct the film. He shall be replacing Mark Romanek, who was earlier slated to direct. For those unaware Branagh is the British actor and director, who helmed the Thor movie. It would be safe to say that Thor was as much a fairy tale as it was a superhero film. In other words, Branagh already has experience in directing a semi-fairy tale, which shall hold him in good stead while directing Cinderella.

Also, Thor was a big ticket project and Cinderella too is expected to a big project, and here too Branagh’s experience with Thor will help him. Reportedly, the movie shall begin shooting in London this fall. Good news is that, Cate Blanchett who was associated with project from the beginning will continue to be a part of the project. Blanchett is slated to play the role of the evil stepmom in the film and based on how talented she is, she shall surely do a good job of it. Fairy tales have enticed audiences in recent times and no other studio knows that better than Disney. After all, the studio produced Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland and the movie ended up collecting more than a billion dollars worldwide, this despite the movie not receiving favorable reviews. Well, Burton has his own take on things, which some like while others don’t, but whatever his movies might lack, is made up by Johnny Depp’s presence.

Brannagh on the other hand is a guy whose work has a lot of Shakespearean and Victorian influence, thanks to him being a Brit and him Kenneth Branagh Cinderella directhaving done Shakespeare both onstage and in movies. Therefore, his take on a movie like Cinderella would probably play out like a fairy tale that many of us as kids have imagined in our heads, when a fairy tale was read to us by our parents.

In other words, Burton had Depp and his eccentricity when he made Alice in Wonderland, Branagh has Shakespeare and other Victorian influences. It would be safe to assume that the film would be rather opulent and grand and the acting would also probably have an old world feel, now that Branagh is in-charge. Twilight: New Moon director Chris Weitz has penned the script for the film, and it would be interesting to see if with the entry of a new director any changes are made to it.
