Johnny Depp Might Star in ‘Transcendence’

‘Transcendence’ is slated to be the directorial debut of “Dark Knight Rises” cinematographer Wally Pfister, and negotiations are on to bring Johnny Depp onboard. “I’m thrilled, and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny,” Pfister, sounding confident in the negotiations, said in a statement. “He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative”.

Pfister must really be keeping his fingers crossed for the negotiations to come through, as roping in Jonny Depp would mean the movie would be halfway to becoming a hit even before it gets made. The plot of “Transcendence” is not yet known, but Pfister did reveal a little bit when he said “I can’t talk too much about it. It’s a present-day science fiction film, a fairly big concept. Its bigger budget — not as big as ‘Batman,’ but not independent.” Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are producers on “Transcendence.”

Pfister also spoke about making a shift from cinematography to direction, for Transcendence.  ”I think it’s really just about wanting to find a new kind of artistic expression. I wouldn’t deny that it’s about control. I’d like to make audiences laugh and cry and you have to be in the director’s chair to manipulate people’s perception of the world and their emotional responses,” he said. “That is a level of power I’d like to feel”. Well it has to be said that Pfister is a really great cinematographer and has in fact won an Oscar for ‘Inception’. Let us hope his attempt at being a director is as successful.

Well, one thing is for sure, Pfister will get all the guidance and help that he needs on ‘Transcendence’, primarily because Christopher Nolan is a part of this project. After all, who can be a better guide for a newbie director than a man, who has not only managed to garner critical acclaim for his films but most of those films have gone on to make more than a billion dollars at the box-office. Here’s hoping the negotiations are fruitful and Johnny Depp comes onboard.
