JJ Abrams Shall Direct The New ‘Star Wars’ Film

JJ Abrams director new Star Wars filmWell, seeing that JJ Abrams is the hottest property in Hollywood at the moment, it isn’t surprising that it going to be him who shall direct the new Star Wars movie. Turns out, Ben Affleck was also a contender but in the end Abrams was chosen over Affleck. Probably, the fact that Abrams has quite a bit of experience in handling big tickets projects, must have worked in his favor. After all, Abrams besides directing movies like Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek and Super 8, also runs one of the most successful production companies in Hollywood, Bad Robot. Besides, he has co-created TV shows like Lost, Fringe and Alias. All of this should give you an idea of the many talents the man has when it comes making movies.

As far as the movie is concerned, speculation was rife regarding who would helm the news Star Wars film even since Disney bought Lucasfilm and now at long last it has been revealed. Interestingly, in November Abrams had denied the fact that he would direct the film when he was asked about it. But it seems the execs at Disney must have made him an offer he ultimately couldn’t refuse. Abrams on his part has always maintained that the special effects in Star Wars impressed him right from the beginning, so it’s not like he isn’t somewhat of a fan of the franchise. In addition, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy had been pursuing Abrams for quite some time to be a part of the project.

Abrams agreeing to do a film with Disney might not sit too well with Paramount though, as Abrams has been associated with Paramount JJ Abrams director new Star Warsfor years. Abrams on his part has been feverishly working on “Star Trek Into Darkness,” his second Star Trek film since he rebooted the franchise in 2009. “Into Darkness,” is still in post-production and opens May 18. Even after that Abrams has a number of projects lined up as producer.

As a director though, he does not have any future commitments and can therefore concentrate on directing the Star Wars film without any distractions. Disney is hoping to release the film in 2015 and would hence expect Abrams to begin work on it in the near future. It’s been rumored that the new film will once again see Harrison Ford as Hans Solo, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher as Leia, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
