robert downing jr as iron manRobert Downey Jr. may play one amazing superhero in the movies, but he is definitely still human. Downey recently injured his ankle while performing a stunt during the shooting of “Iron Man 3″ on a North Carolina set. The threequel is now at a standstill in production until the star is healed. Filming has been delayed to allow Downey time to recover from the incident.

Marvel Studios issued a statement stating “Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of “Iron Man 3″ in Wilmington, N.C., while performing a stunt. There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates.”

The first two films had whopping success, both grossing around $600 million. The expectations for “Iron Man 3″ are just as high, if not higher after the success of “The Avengers.”

The project began filming back in May of this year. Those returning to the film are Gwyneth Paltrow and Guy Pearce. Ben Kingsley and Rebecca Hall will both be in this third film. The story line of the film has been kept secret, but it is believed to be based on the comic book’s popular Extremis plot, where a scientist creates a drug that can induce superhuman traits in those who take it.

Last month at ComicCon, the filmmakers answered questions surrounding the film, confirming that Kingsley will be playing the villain, robert smilingMandarin. They also let some see a bit of footage from what has already been filmed.

Shane Black, who is at the helm of this third “Iron Man” stated at Comic-Con that over half the film had already been shot, and that as long as they didn’t mess up the rest, the film would be great. Of course it will be Black! And none of us can wait. “Iron Man 3″ is set to be released on May 3, 2013.

Downey is not the only star who is currently recovering from an injury received on the job. You may remember that Actress Kristin Chenoweth announced that she would be leaving “The Good Wife” after she sustained a head injury on the set of the show when a lighting rig fell on her while shooting in New York.

She issued a statement earlier this week stating that she regretfully must leave “The Good Wife” due to her injuries. She also stated that she is slowly recovering and is grateful for everyone’s concern for her health. Though her last appearance on the show will be the fourth season premiere which will air in September, the heads of the show have not ruled out a later return for the Broadway veteran.
