“Gangster Squad” Premiere Postponed

Warner Brothers has been given three months to either re-shoot or get rid of a scene in the upcoming Ryan Gosling and Sean Penn movie Gangster Squad. The film was set to release on September 7th, 2012 and is a movie about gang warfare during the 40s and 50s. The scene causing the delay bares a chilling resemblance to recent events in Aurora, CO, only Gosling and Penn get into a shootout in a theater full of people.Warner Brothers has already pulled previews for the upcoming film from the trailers for Batman Dark Knight Rises, for obvious reasons, but are currently facing a law suit filed last week filed by a survivor of the devastating events in Colorado. According to USA Today “Torrence Brown Jr., a friend of victim A.J. Bolk, who died in the shooting, sued the theater, alleging inadequate security, and Warner Bros., claiming Rises‘ violent themes provoked the attack.”

The scene in question is considered a large part of the movie and so will need re written as well as being able to get Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, and Emma Stone back together since all three are currently working on other projects now. A tentative January 11th, 2013 release date has been set, but there is no telling whether or not all the necessary corrections will have been made by then.

Jeff Bock, box office analyst for the tracking firm Exhibitor Relations states “Warner Bros. has been more sensitive than anyone to this shooting, and I don’t think North American audiences will ever see that (theater) scene.”

How do you feel about the law suit towards Warner Brothers? Had the events on July 20 not happened, would Americans have even thought twice about a movie like Gangster Squad? We live in a society where movies and television inspired by crime and violence are very popular.

It is a topic that easily becomes a double edge sword and a topic of heated debate. Warner Brothers is at least being sensitive to the tragedy in Colorado and releasing Gangster Squad as is would just be a disaster.
