Dredd Sequel A Possibility

If screenwriter Alex Garland has any say in it, we might actually end up witnessing a sequel to the gory and enjoyably violent Dredd. Although, the studio hasn’t confirmed anything as yet, and is probably waiting to see the kind of response the movie manages to receive from the audience. Garland on his part like a true screenwriter, has begun cooking ideas in his head, for the sequel.

“From my point of view, the politics is a lot of what I want to get into,” said Garland. “There’s a lot of stuff that’s implied in the first film that you could really explore a lot more of in the second. Dredd is part of a police state. He’s a fascist. The subversives are sometimes the enemy in the comic books – there’s something really interesting about pro-democracy terrorists. Where the bad guys are the people fighting for democracy. Of course they’re not the bad guys, because you should be fighting for democracy. I would like to explore that.”

The whole premise sounds really intriguing and much more complex than, the movie that has just released. The present installment of Dredd on its part is extremely violent and has a fairly simple storyline, despite being set in the future. Its storyline can be called nothing more than linear, as it follows a fairly straight and simple path. But what it lacks in script, it makes up for in action and thrills.

Hopefully, if a sequel does get made, it would still have Karl Urban as the judge. It might be considered a sin to even say this, but he did a much better job of playing the judge than Stallone had managed, in the 90’s version. Urban is known to be a fairly decent actor; therefore he could probably make the character of Dredd even more intriguing than it already is. Possibly, in the sequel we might even get to see him remove his helmet and give way to a few emotions, which he did not even for a second, in the present installment. The question is, how much darker and gorier can they make the sequel?
