Tom Hanks and Emma ThompsonToday, Disney began the production of their film, “Saving Mr. Banks.” The film is the story of Walt Disney’s twenty year fight for the film rights to P.L. Travers’ novel, “Mary Poppins,” and the strange partnership between the filmmaker and writer while the film was in pre-production in 1961.

Tom Hanks will be playing the role of Disney (which will be the first time the man has been depicted in a film) while Emma Thompson will be playing the role of the novelist. Before she signs away the rights for her book, Travers’ demanded script and character control and in the process, had quite a different vision for the film from Disney and the screenwriter Don DaGradi and composers Richard and Robert Sherman. The film went on to win five Oscars in 1965.

In 1961 Travers comes to Hollywood from London to discuss the fact that Disney wanted to put her beloved story on the motion picture Screen. Disney had promised his daughters in the 40′s that he would try to do so. While she stays in California, Travers often reflects back to her childhood in Australia in 1906, which was a very hard time for her family, and also inspired her to write her 1934 book.

Travers very own father was the inspiration for the character of Mr. Banks, to whom Mary Poppins comes to help. Her father was a tormented banker, who had instilled in her affection and enlightenment just before his untimely death. Though Travers was reluctant to give Disney the rights to her book, she recognized that famous storyteller had his very own reasons for wanting to make the film, many of which had something to do with his very own father in early 20th century Midwest.

Colin Farrel is playing as Travers’ dad, Goff, while Ruth Wilson plays his wife, Margaret. Rachel Griffiths plays Margaret’s sister, Aunt Ellie, while the 11 year old Aussie girl Annie Buckley will be playing the young writer, nicknamed “Ginty.”P.L. Travers

Bradley Whitford will play Don DaGradi, the screen writer while Jason Schwartzman and BJ Novak will play the Sherkman Brothers. Paul Giamatti will play Ralph who is Travers limousine driver during her two weeks in Hollywood.

The film will be directed by John Lee Hancock and is based on the screenplay by Kelly Marcel. Hancock’s team includes a trio of artists that he worked with on the 2009 Best Picture Oscar nominee, “The Blind Side”, the production designer, Michael Corenblith, costume designer, Daniel Orlandi, and film editor, Mark Livolsi.

The film will be shot in Los Angeles and will include many locations in Disneyland and the Disney studios in Burbank. The filming should end near Thanksgiving and has no release date yet.
