Dark Knight Rises Massacre: The Aftermath

poster of dark knight risesIn the shadow of the Batman Dark Knight Rises Massacre in Aurora, Co the long awaited ending to the franchise is breaking box offices on a global scale.  The film’s success however has been muted by a reluctance to go see it, because of the attack in Colorado and then several in other states such as Massachusetts, Arizona, and California.  Reportedly topping the charts at a whopping $289M in the US and $537M on a global scale, it would seem that things were going well. These numbers however have dropped 60% since opening weekend and could possibly continue because let’s face it people are scared and with good reason.

James Holmes the shooter in the Massacre has been charged with 132 criminal charges, including 24 first degree murder charges, but for one Colorado mother it will never be enough. Ashley Mouser found out Saturday, that her daughter, 6 year old Veronica was among one of the many lives lost. When told relatives broke the news to her about Veronica, family says “she burst into tears and screamed I want to die.”  The only thing that gave this mother the strength to even try after that blow was the baby she was carrying.

However now she has also now lost her unborn child and she will likely be paralyzed because of the injuries sustained. What is worse is that it is not certain that Mouser and her boyfriend with receive justice for their then 8 week old fetus, due to laws in Colorado.   These great losses also follow the loss of her father only a short time before to leukemia.

Christen Bale, who plays the Dark Knight himself, took time away from his schedule and spent 2 ½ hours up at the hospital with victims of this vehement crime.  This was after a massive facebook and twitter campaign, though it is refreshing to see a celebrity care enough to listen. Bale and his wife also met with doctors, nurses, EMTs and other first responders.  The only thing that would have been better  is if he had shown up clad in full Batman attire, because if real villains can exist it would only seem fitting for a real hero to rise as well.

How do you feel about seeing the Dark Knight Rises?  Personally with all the mentally unstable people out there totting the arsenal fit for a small army, I find myself leery of seeing this movie myself. My logic as I am sure many others have been is that yeah there is a strong chance it won’t happen, but having two small children to care for, would my husband and I really want to find out? This will also most certainly spark more heat on guns and gun control debate, but that’s a whole other story.
