Day-Lewis is playing the president in Steven Spielberg’s newest film, “Lincoln.” The resemblance is a bit unnerving. Spielberg said that not only are his looks so similar to the president, but that Day-Lewis was also able to capture hit pensive quality that made him the leader that he was.

The film is scheduled to hit some theaters on November 9th and will expand everywhere on November 16th. The movie already has a ton of award buzz surrounding it. Day-Lewis has received two Oscars in the past: one for “There Will Be Blood” and another for “My Left Foot.”

Apparently there are many rumors surrounding Day-Lewis and how well he seemed to channel the 16th president of the United States. Some claimed that to help him immerse himself in the character, Day-Lewis tried to avoid all of our modern luxuries. Spielberg countered that the actor never ignored his “contemporary surroundings.” Spielberg did reveal that everyone on set referred to the actor as Mr. President, but he said he called all the actors by their character names. “That was something I felt was important to establish a little authenticity, maybe even more for me than for them,” said Spielberg.

“Lincoln” is based on the book “Team of Rivals” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Also starring in the film is Tommy Lee Jones, who recently finished the movie “Hope Springs.” He plays Thaddeus Stevens who was one of Lincoln’s adversaries. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was in the latest Batman film “Dark Knight Rises”, plays Robert, one of Lincoln’s two sons.  Academy Award-winning Sally Field plays Day-Lewis’ wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.

Spielberg spoke with Entertainment Weekly about President Lincoln. He said the president had a complicated, yet clear inner life. He was very Daniel Day-Lewis in theater as Abraham Lincolnwise talked things out before making decisions. Being so slow to make decisions often bothered many of his critics.

The movie is about Lincoln, his cabinet, and the tough decisions Lincoln had to make in spite of overwhelming opposition. It has been a long time coming. Spielberg made the decision almost a decade ago to make the film based on Goodwin’s book, which was not even finished at the time. The film only includes a small part of the 2005 best seller.

The film shows Lincoln’s last four months of life and the strategies he used during the end of the Civil War. The movie begins with Lincoln, who has realized that the Emancipation Proclamation can easily be negated and that he will need a more constitutional measure to successfully abolish slavery.

Years ago, Spielberg was able to have his own private Lincoln moment. He was able to tour an archive of the president’s possessions in Springfield, Ill. He was able to touch the dress that Mary had been wearing the evening Lincoln was assassinated. He also had the opportunity to hold Lincoln’s hat. He said his only thought was that he “would never be as tall as” Lincoln.
