Christopher Nolan Filed Lawsuit Against Agencies

Christopher Nolan and Emma ThomasChristopher Nolan (the genius director behind the “Dark Knight” trilogy) and his wife have just filed a lawsuit against their current and former agents. The Nolan’s are claiming that the agents as attacking them over millions in commissions, and they just want out of the middle of the whole drama filled ordeal.

Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas (who also helps to produce his films), and their company, Syncopy filed the lawsuit in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, stating that Nolan’s current agency, William Morris Endeavor is claiming the profits from films that were originally shepherded by Nolan’s previous agency CAA. CAA is claiming that they are still owed money from those very same projects, and now there is a huge conflict. The Nolan’s just so happen to be right smack dab in the very middle.

The lawsuit states that the Nolan and his wife are willing to pay what they owe in commissions, but they want a court to decide who gets the money, so that they don’t end up paying one agency and being sued by another.

Why the change in agencies? Nolan’s lead agent, Dan Aloni, was let go from CAA earlier in the year and then later signed on with WME. I guess he took his clients with him when he left. Now both companies are saying that he needs to pay the commissions they are owed on the millions he and his wife earned from the mega-hit film, “The Dark Knight Rises.”

The suit states that both companies are making demands on Nolan and his wife to pay commissions on sums arising from the same project. CAA has said that is deserves to be paid for the revenue off any project that was initiated while Nolan was their client. WME signed Nolan before “The Dark Knight Rises” was released and handled all the strategy calls after the Aurora, Colorado shooting, and they have stated that as his agency of record, they have a right to a portion of those payments.

Nolan and his wife have stated in the suit that they take no side as to which agency should receive the money. They want the agencies to work it all out. And there is a lot at stake here. The Nolan’s have made some pretty sweet deals with Warner Brothers, thanks to their earlier successes. “The Dark Knight Rises” has now grossed $433 million in the states and $574 million internationally for a total of just over $1 billion.Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas

The suit does not directly state just what percentage the agencies are owed but guesses are that it is a bit less than the usual 10 percent. But still, it is bound to be a large amount.

On a side note, when Aloni was fired from CAA and then joined WME, he took many of his high profile clients with him. Besides Nolan, Aloni also brought along Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Jay Roach, Tom Shadyac, Neal Moritz, Jonathan Mostow, and David Goyer.
