Bourne Legacy Premieres In New York

movie poster of bourne legacyThe fourth installment of the Bourne series, Bourne Legacy, premiered last night at New York’s Ziegfeld Theater. Of course, the stars of the movie, Jeremy Renner (who plays Aaron Cross) and Rachel Weisz (who plays Dr. Marta Shearling) were there. Many have been confused about this latest Bourne movie, since it does not include Jason Bourne in the actual film. Yes he is mentioned, but how does this film relate to the other Bourne movies?

There is no Matt Damon in Bourne Legacy, but there is mention of Jason Bourne. Legacy is neither a prequel nor a sequel. It actually occurs in conjunction and parallel with Bourne Ultimatum. Aaron Cross is a medically enhanced agent who survives the end of his program which ended due to previous Jason Bourne exploits. His super abilities are reliant on daily medication. As it turns out, Dr. Marta Shearling may have the key to his abilities.

This fourth movie was originally going to include Matt Damon, the star of the series along with many other actors and actresses who’ve played parts in the Bourne movies, including Julia Stiles and Joan Allen. Talk of the fourth movie began only weeks after the third movie, Bourne Ultimatum released 5 years ago. The project was abruptly canceled and in 2009, Paul Greengrass, who directed Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum, said that he would not be directing the fourth film. Damon said he would not return without Greengrass.

In 2010, Tony Gilroy, who had written the screenplays for the previous three movies, announced that he would write and direct the fourth film and that it would not include the star of the series, Jason Bourne, though it does keep the Bourne name to connect it with the previous three films.

The writers had a challenge on their hands, creating a fourth Bourne movie without Bourne. The story is intriguing, as it expands on the Bourne stories, rather than trying to create its own spinoff.  This fourth installment shows what effect Jason Bourne has had on the CIA community and other projects similar to his.  Now that they have shown this other side, or expanded view of the Bourne environment, I think we can expect at least another movie or two. Matt Damon has even said he would be open to being a part of a fifth movie, but doubts that they would ask him back now that Renner has become the star.

Damon also mentioned that it’s all about the script. The script would have to fit and fit well in order for him to rejoin the Bourne films. I hope they’re able to get one that he likes and wants to be a part of. But even if they don’t, you can bet the Bourne movies will not end on this fourth film.
