A Movie On ‘Monopoly’ Might Get Made

Submitted by on October 5, 2012 – 12:00 pm Comments

Hasbro the American multinational toy and board game company, and one of the largest toy makers in the world has struck a deal with Emmet/Furla Films.  As a part of this deal, many of its games would get made into movies. As a matter of fact, a movie based on a Hasbro game has already been made and released. The movie is none other than the recently released ‘Battleship’ starring big names like Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch and Liam Neeson.

The studio is now thinking of bringing the popular property based game ‘Monopoly’ to the big screen. Monopoly is one of the most popular games that Hasbro owns, and it would be really interesting to see how the studio plans to convert this popular game into a movie. Turns out, this is not the first time Monopoly has been optioned for the big screen. In November 2008, Ridley Scott was announced to direct Universal Pictures’ film version of the game, based on a script written by Pamela Pettler and Alex Hyner, but is unlikely to be involved in the latest attempt.

Emmett/Furla Films will finance and co-produce the film with Hasbro’s Brian Goldner, and the development of the project is reportedly slated to begin by the next year itself. The story of the film is being developed by author Frank Beddor. Going by the budget that ‘Battleship’ saw, it won’t be surprising if the studio pulls all stops even when it comes to making ‘Monopoly’. For the uninitiated the game is named after the economic concept of ‘monopoly’, the domination of a market by a single entity. In the future, the studio is planning to bring other Hasbro properties like Action Man and Hungry Hungry Hippos to the silver screen.

Hasbro on its part is the largest producer of board games in the world and has top selling games like: Pictionary, Scrabble, The Game of Life and many others, besides Battleship and Monopoly. Hasbro has also been involved in developing both animated and big budget live-action film adaptations based on their toy lines. Basically, Hasbro is involved in the development of the Transformers movie franchise and the G.I. Joe movie franchise, as Hasbro owns both the toy brands.
