Richard Belzer: A Jewish Nazi?

Submitted by on October 3, 2012 – 9:30 am Comments

Not sure when it became cool or acceptable to say things like “Say HEIL to all your colleagues at the other division.”, while raising your arm into the Nazi salute but that is exactly what “Law & Order” star Richard Belzer did today on an interview with Fox 5 in New York. That’s right folks Richard Belzer who was born and raised in a Jewish family thinks it’s funny to mock…well, the Jews.

This isn’t the first time either, back in June Belzer gave the Nazi salute at a red carpet event. One of his reps later tells TMZ ‘Richard’s Nazi joke was a “satirical gesture toward Fox News … whose ideology he is opposed to.” Interesting since Belzer agreed to the interview on Fox 5 that was to be a friendly chat.

Richard Belzer started his career as a stand-up comedian, later becoming a featured player on National Lampoon Radio Hour with comedian greats such as Chevy Chase, Bill Murry and Gilda Radner to name a few. Belzer has also been a frequent guest on the Howard Stern Show. 1990 saw the beginning of Belzer’s acting career with small roles in several TV show before landing a reoccurring role as Inspector William Henderson on “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”.  Not to mention the part Blazer is best known for, he has played the Det. Munch’s character on ‘Law & Order’ for both Homicide and SVU.

There is no doubt Richard Belzer has had a successful career, and I am sure that the anchor of the Fox 5 New York were happy to have Belzer on for an interview until he made this comment in answer to a callers statement. Some feel that this is being taken out of proportion, but it is still strange to us. The call came in as:

Caller: “[The anchor] should play [Richard's] brother on the show/”
Belzer: “If he gets molested and banged in the ass, maybe.”
Wow, that was on Fox. No delay button or bleep even thought that was discussed on air as well. It just continues from there as Belzer tries unsuccessfully to apologize for his comment in a joking explanation “I meant banged against a piece of furniture.” The look on both new anchors faces is priceless, total shock and confusion.

Richard Belzer then puts the cherry on top with his “Say HEIL to all your colleagues at the other division.” And his arm raised in a Nazi salute. I’m sure that at this point the big wigs at Fox would have preferred it if Richard Belzer had just said no when asked to do the interview.
