No Doubt New Album Causes The Band To Reminisce

No DoubtNo Doubt is getting ready to release their first album in over 10 years tomorrow. While the band spoke about their new album “Push and Shove” they also discussed their journey together, the ups and the downs. No Doubt consists of Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Adrian Young, and Tom Dumont. For over 20 years the group has had much heartache, but also many incredible successes.

No Doubt originally formed in 1986 in California. In 1989, Stefani finally joined the group as lead vocal. The group had their first big hit in 1995 with their album “Tragic Kingdom.” In 2000, they had another huge success with “Return of Saturn.”

In 2004, the group decided to take a break to work on their individual interests. Stefani released her album “Love. Angel. Music. Baby.” later on in 2004. She quickly began a pop idol as her music career took on a life of its own, while she also began a career in fashion, and started a family.

The fact that the band has been through thick and thin together lends itself to a much grounded group. In the early days of No Doubt, Stefani and Kanal began a relationship that would come to shake the group’s foundation. Though Stefani heard wedding bells in their future, Kanal had a different idea, and ended the couples’ relationship in 1994. One of the bands most popular songs, “Don’t Speak” was written about the breakup and both Kanal and Stefani agree that this time was one of the most difficult points of their lives.

Kanal spoke about the break up and said that they were on tour for their album “Tragic Kingdom” for 28 months straight. They were also going through the breakup at the same time and were being asked about it in every interview they did. “So we were opening this wound on an hourly basis. It was so brutal but I don’t know how we made it through.”

The breakup did, however, release some of the creativity in Stefani. She said that prior to the breakup, she was much more passive about everything, that all she cared about was being in love. She no longer knows that person. After the breakup, the songs began to flow and Stefani realized she had a talent for songwriting.Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal

The group’s story definitely has a happy ending. In 2002, Stefani married Gavin Rossdale, the frontman of the band Bush. Stefani and Kanal were able to mend their relationship and Stefani even penned the song “Cool” for him.

The pair wrote their new song “Undone” together, which is a ballad off their new album. They wrote the song over two days. Prior to writing the song, Stefani mentioned that she hadn’t felt like they were emotionally able to write a slower song. But they did.

With their new album, No Doubt is getting back to their roots, with a bit of the 80′s pop and Southern California sound we’ve come to know and love. They’ve also included some ska, dubstep and reggae. Kanal said that while they do want to sound more modern, “there’s no way to escape who we are.” And that is one thing us fans are very grateful for.
