‘Modern Family’ Star Ariel Winter’s Mother Denies Abusing Her

Recently ‘Modern Family’ star Ariel Winter procured a restraining order against her mother and moved out of the house. According to court papers filed Oct. 3 in Los Angeles, Winter who plays Alex Dunphy on the hit show – alleges her mother subjected her to “ongoing physical abuse (slapping, hitting, pushing) and emotional abuse (vile name-calling, personal insults about minor and minor’s weight, attempts to ‘sexualize’ minor, deprivation of food, etc.) for an extended period of time”.

Chris Workman, Ariel’s mother, has denied the allegation made by her. “It’s all untrue, it’s all untrue” Workman was quoted as saying. “I have my doctor’s letter that my daughter’s never been abused. … I have stylists’ letters that she’s never been abused” Workman added. Additionally, Winter’s brother, Jimmy Workman, also denied the abuse claims. “There is no truth to these allegations,” he told Us Weekly. “This is a mother who does everything for her kids… Chris misses Ariel and wants her to come home” he added.

For now a judge has granted Ariel’s older sister, Shanelle Gray, temporary guardianship and ordered Workman not to contact her daughter until further notice. Shanelle though, does not have access to the actress’ income from her hit ABC series. Attorneys handling the guardianship had sought to transfer control of the young star’s earnings from an account her mother can access to a blocked account. A judge did not grant that request, but it may be renewed at a later date. A follow-up hearing has been scheduled for November 20.  Gray will retain guardianship of Winter at least until the November 20 hearing, a judge said.  An independent attorney has been appointed to oversee the teen star’s interests in the case. When contacted ABC had no comment, also, Winter’s rep was not available for comment.

Winter, who started acting in films and TV shows at age 7, currently plays Alex Dunphy on the hit ABC comedy. Winter has appeared in several TV series, including “ER” and “Phineas and Ferb,” and movies such as “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” “Ice Age: The Meltdown” and “ParaNorman”. In 2012, Winter was cast as Sofia, the lead character in a new Disney animated franchise. The series will premiere with a movie due for release in late 2012. The television series is set to premiere in 2013 on Disney Junior.
