Mike Love of The Beach Boys Drops Three Members From The Group

Mike Love, David Marks, Brian Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Al JardineThough the Beach Boys are still on their UK tour, three of the members are getting the boot. The band’s frontman Mike Love announced that the group will be splitting after this week and that three of the members have been dropped from the group, Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, and David Marks. The three did not realize they had been let go from the group until a public statement was released by Love and Bruce Johnston.

The statement said, “The post-50th anniversary configuration will not include Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks. The 50th Reunion Tour was designed to be a set tour with a beginning and an end to mark a special 50 year milestone for the band.”

Those who are leaving the Beach Boys will be replaced by the group’s backing band, which does include Love’s son Christian. The decision to drop the three members was a financial one according to Love. “You’ve got to be careful not to get overexposed. There are promoters who are interested [in more shows by the reunited line-up], but they’ve said, ‘Give it a rest for a year’. The Eagles found out the hard way when they went out for a second year and wound up selling tickets for $5.”

Many of the members who dropped had absolutely no idea. Wilson was completely thrown for a loop. He said that he was so disappointed and doesn’t understand why Love wouldn’t want to tour with Al, David, and himself. He said they had been having a great time. “After all, we are the real Beach Boys.”

If the band can’t figure out their issues, their concert on September 28th at the Wembley Stadium will probably be the last show they play together. There is a petition on iPetition.com that is asking for Love to reconsider the decision to drop three of the Boys. Love is the one who actually owns the rights to the band’s name.Beach Boys

The petition states “In order to preserve the validity of “The Beach Boys’ as a whole, and not as a ‘money saving, stripped down version’ that only contains 1 original member, and 1 member that joined in 1965, we ask you to reinstate the 3 other members to the touring group for your final years performing.” The message ends by saying that this is the right thing to do, and what the fans want. The petition has nearly 2,000 signatures right now.

One thing I wonder if Love has thought about is that if the other three members decide to go on tour on their own, they actually have more of the Beach Boys than he does. I would pay more to see three of the original Beach Boys than I would to see two of them.

The Reunion Tour is the first time the band, which formed in 1961, has toured together in more than two decades. There have been previous issues in the past, and a few lawsuits as well. Love had sworn that all the negativity was behind them. I suppose he was simply lying.
