Mel Gibson one might feel has lost all his friends in Hollywood, but that’s not completely true. Recently, actress Madeleine Stowe came to his defense. The Revenge star, who has acted with Gibson in the 2002 movie We Were Soldiers, still considers Gibson a friend. She in fact, praised the humanitarian work that he has done with his ex-wife Robyn Moore. “He has been a very good friend to me. He’s very tortured by what’s going on. I do not believe that he’s an anti-Semite in my heart of hearts. I think that he’s a very complex, deep individual” she was quoted as saying.

Stowe did not comment, when asked in detail about the comments that Gibson made, which can be construed to be racist and anti-semetic in nature. She also revealed that she has never seen this dark side of his. “I can only tell you the Mel that I know,” Stowe said. “And he was probably one of the most wonderful people on the set, ever. … He’s a special man” she added. Gibson has been accused of being an anti-semite from the time he made the movie ‘Passion of the Christ’.

The movie sparked a fierce debate over alleged anti-semitic imagery and overtones. Gibson denied that the film was anti-semitic, but critics remained divided. Some agreed that the film was consistent with the Gospels and traditional Catholic teachings, while others argued that it reflected a selective reading of the Gospels.

Then on On July 8, 2010, Gibson was accused of racism, for allegedly having used the term “wetbacks” as he suggested turning in one of his employees to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. His excessive drinking too has been an issue. On July 28, 2006, Gibson was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) while speeding in his vehicle with an open container of alcohol, which is illegal in much of the United States. According to a 2011 article in Vanity Fair, Gibson first told the arresting officer, “My life is over. I’m fucked. Robyn’s going to leave me.”According to the arrest report, Gibson then exploded into an angry tirade at the arresting officer. Gibson climaxed with the words, “Fucking Jews… the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”
