Lil Wayne Breaks Elvis’s Record

Submitted by on September 27, 2012 – 12:24 pm Comments

Lil Wayne managed to make rap and rock ‘n’ roll history all at the same time, when he broke Elvis’s record as the male with the most entries on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Lil Wayne now has 109 songs on that chart. Although it has to be added that, of his 109 charted songs, only 42 are led by Lil Wayne; 67 are songs where he is the featured act. Surely, this fact takes away plenty of sheen from Lil Wayne’s big achievement. On the other hand Presley has a total od 108 songs on the Hot 100 since its inception in 1958.

Interestingly, Presley’s career had begun before that, therefore many of hits like “Heartbreak Hotel” and others could not be included in his total number. As far as Lil Wayne is concerned, it would interest you to know that, Lil Wayne names Prince as one of his favorite musicians and biggest influences. Many Lil’ Wayne songs contain lyrical references to, past Prince hits. More surprisingly, Wayne revealed in an interview that he’s also inspired by Kurt Cobain, having been a major Nirvana fan since childhood. As far as his achievements are concerned, his sixth studio album, the highly-anticipated ‘Tha Carter III’, sold over one million copies in the US during its first week of release.

Therefore, the album was certified platinum by the RIAA and debuted at #1 on The Billboard 200. ‘Tha Carter III’ is the first album to reach platinum status within a week since 50 Cent’s ‘The Massacre’ in 2005. So the guy is hugely liked, there is no doubt about that. It really can’t be adjudged though, if his achievements can be compared to those of Elvis’s, because the two are from totally different eras, and their genre of music too is as different as chalk and cheese.

One has to also agree that, during Elvis’s era there was no internet, which meant the scope for publicity was really slim, despite this Elvis achieved the cult status that he did. On the other hand, Elvis didn’t have as much competition either, where Lil Wayne has to contend with other popular rappers who have made their mark, that he can hold his own despite the competition, speaks volumes about his talent.
