Lauryn Hill Adds $446,000 to Her Total Taxes Owed

Lauryn HillLauryn Hill recently plead guilty to evading federal taxes on over $1.8 million earned over the course of three years, from 2005-2007. The singer could face jail time, up to three years, or one year for each of the three counts that have been held against her.

We are just now finding out that she also dropped the ball when it comes to her state taxes as well. During the same time mentioned above, Hill neglected to pay any state taxes, to the tune of $440,000 owed to the State of New Jersey.

A civil judgment was filed again Hill in June by a Jersey state court. They have found that the singer owes a total of $446,386 unpaid state taxes. Just before a judgment was reached regarding the state taxes, Hill was officially charged with failing to file her Federal Tax returns. She did plead “guilty” and as mentioned before, and could face up to three years in prison and close to $75,000 in fines.

The judge asked Hill outright if she had intentionally and willingly refused to file the returns. She stated that yes, she had. Hill was released on $150,000 bail. Though Hill gracefully declined to comment on the situation after the trial, her attorney, Nathan Hochman did seem to say that Hill fully plans to pay back the taxes owed.

Luckily, the state tax evasion has yet to become a criminal matter, but that does not mean it couldn’t. U.S. Magistrate Michael Shipp has said that they will delay the sentencing from early October until late November so that Hill has time to make possible payments. Hill has been scheduled in November to face sentencing on the federal tax situation.

Shipp did ask Hill if someone had influenced her decision to plead guilty. She stated that she had been told that she needed to wait to speak out about directly about the situation until sentencing.

The income that has been questioned was $818,000 in 2005, $222,000 in 2006, and $761,000 in 2007. The income was earned by the four different corporations that Hill is owner of.

Hill did address the issue on Tumblr. She said that during this time of crisis, much had been said regarding the situation, most of which was inaccurate. She said that some of those had been dependent on her “creative force” and those individuals were unwilling to recognize Hill’s role, or to compensate her for it.lauryn hill

Hill even went so far as to say that her “Potential to work” was in danger. She said she did what had to be done to protect her family from the hostility and manipulation that she has been surrounded by.

Apparently Oprah Winfrey has tried to see if she could interview the singer, but Hill has refused. Maybe she should take advantage of the opportunity to address the issue publicly. It would more than likely gain the sympathy of her fans, instead of trashing those who have worked with and for her.
