Kelsey Grammer Exonerated In Ponzi-Scheme Lawsuit

Submitted by on November 7, 2012 – 10:00 am Comments

In today’s age, when you think Ponzi-Scheme, one name that comes to mind is Bernie Madoff. Luckily for Kelsey Grammer who was named in a Ponzi-Scheme lawsuit, the nightmare is over, as he has been let off the hook, with his named being removed from the lawsuit. Fans of Grammer can therefore heave a sigh of relief that Grammer’s named wouldn’t be taken in the same breath as Madoff’s. Basically, the 57-year-old actor is no longer named as a defendant in the suit brought against him by actress Lydia Cornell.

Grammer was one of several individuals sued by Cornell in June over what she claimed was an Internet-based Ponzi scheme called Staropoly.com. Cornell and her fellow plaintiffs had alleged that the man accused of being behind the scheme piggybacked on Grammer’s name to con others into joining the venture. Marty Singer, Kelsey’s lawyer had at that time refuted the claims and was quoted as saying “Kelsey received nothing from the venture, monetarily or otherwise”. In fact he claimed that, Kelsey lost $1 million of his own hard earned money to the scheme.

Grammer on his part has had his share of brushes with the law. In 1988, Grammer was arrested for drunken driving and cocaine possession and sentenced to 30 days in jail. Grammer was arrested again for cocaine possession in August 1990 and was sentenced to three years’ probation, fined $500, and given 300 hours of community service. In January 1991, Grammer was given an additional two years’ probation for violating his original probation through additional cocaine use. Then in 1995, Grammer was sued by ex-girlfriend Cerlette Lamme for defamation of character and invasion of privacy over content he included in his autobiography So Far.

In September 1996, he crashed his Dodge Viper while intoxicated and subsequently checked into the Betty Ford Center for 30 days. As you can see, over the years he has been quite the wild child and hasn’t really worn his success well, but in the past decade or so it has to be admitted that age has mellowed him down. One thing that hasn’t changed over the years though is the impeccable quality of his performances and with this lawsuit out of the way, the only way for Grammer to go from here is up.
