Jeff Ross Makes Dark Knight Rises Joke At Roast Of Roseanne Barr

Jeff RossA scene from the upcoming “Roast of Roseanne” which airs August 12th at 10pm, on Comedy Central will be missing a joke from Jeff Ross. Ross made a joke about Seth Green because he has red hair like James Holmes, stating “Seth, congratulations. This is actually a great night for you … you haven’t gotten this much attention since you shot all those people in Aurora. … I’m kidding. You are not like James Holmes. At least he did something in a movie theater that people remember!” The audience let out a gasp, clearly the “P” on his jacket should have stood for something else because that was not a joke the crowd was willing to take, nobody was laughing.
The Producers were not laughing. As is certain the families in Aurora are not laughing right now. In the shadows of a catastrophe how is it that comedians have been cracking jokes? The first to make a joke about the incident in Colorado a few weeks ago was Dane Cook who has since apologized and now with Jeff Ross. Ross did say he crossed a line, “That is what Roasts are about.” The Comedian even came to the roast dressed as Joe Paterno, (the late coach for Penn State who died a few months after being fired for the scandal surrounding his former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky) complete with two young men dressed in only towels and football helmets. When asked by the Hollywood Reporter about his costume Ross stated “If they’re offended by what they see, they can do what Joe Paterno did – look the other way.”

However how far is too far? With many families still grieving, all of the victims still fighting to heal, this is not an issue that is old. It is still very much an open wound, and it is hard to understand how someone could make a joke like Ross or Cook did. In the public’s eye it really does not matter there are lines you just do not cross and right now Aurora is one of those lines. The backlash you receive as a celebrity hardly makes any joke you are going to make worth it. How is laughing at someone else’s pain really all that funny anyway.
What do you think? Was his joke too far and out of line? Or do you think people are being too sensitive?
