Hugh Grant Wants Compensation For Phone Hacking

Submitted by on September 14, 2012 – 2:35 pm Comments

No doubt, phone hacking is a big deal, and there can’t be a bigger infringement of one’s rights that doing that. Rupert Murdock’s minions honestly deserve what’s coming to them from all quarters. The latest to join the bandwagon is Hugh Grant. Other celebrates like Sienna Miller, JK Rowling and Steve Coogan are also victims of this heinous act.  Hugh decided to take the initiative and filed a petition in London’s high court seeking damages against Murdoch-owned News International.

He is obviously one amongst many, as there have been numerous others who have filed a claim before Hugh and at least 100 others shall reportedly file a claim. Grant’s filing came a day before a court-imposed deadline for victims to file further claims in the case. As it turns out, Hugh is a spokesman for an anti-hacking lobby called ‘Hacked Off’. This should give you an idea of how seriously Hugh takes the issue of hacking. Hugh discovered that the now defunct NOTW had hacked his voicemail.

He then compelled the Scotland Yard to hand over the details of the detective from NOTW who was responsible for the hacking, by getting a court order to that effect.  The 52-year-old star’s civil action is just one of 240 new claims against Murdoch’s media empire, and thus Grant has himself a lot of company. Also, twenty-five people have been arrested in the scandal, the most notable of which was ex-News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks. Grant has decided that the money from the phone hacking case that he has been awarded, shall be used for a noble cause.

Grant is planning to donate this money so it could benefit the victims, who have encountered first hand, the intrusion of the press. Some of the victims connected with the case have already been paid. Siena Miller won a case against NOTW and was awarded a sum of $162000. In addition, NOTW handed $950,000 to Charlotte Church and NOTW tendered a public apology for the whole fiasco. In retrospect it would be safe to say that, NOTW discovered that tendering public apologies can’t always do the trick.
