David Beckham Parting Ways With LA Galaxy

Submitted by on November 20, 2012 – 10:06 am Comments

Fans of Soccer in the US are in for some disappointing news. David Beckham it turns out is leaving LA Galaxy. The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder says MLS Cup 2012 on December 1 will be his final competitive game with the club. Beckham has spent the past six seasons with the Galaxy, helping lead the club to three MLS Cup berths, including the third championship in club history last year when they beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 in MLS Cup 2011. “I’ve had an incredibly special time playing for the LA Galaxy, however, I wanted to experience one last challenge before the end of my playing career,” Beckham said in a statement on the Galaxy’s website. “I don’t see this as the end of my relationship with the league as my ambition is to be part of the ownership structure in the future”.

In his six seasons with the Galaxy, Beckham appeared in 98 regular season games, tallying 18 goals and adding 40 assists, good for the fourth most in club history. “Seldom does an athlete redefine a sport and David not only took our franchise to another level but he took our sport to another level,” said Tim Leiweke, President and CEO of AEG. For the uninitiated, Beckman is an English association footballer. He has played for Manchester United, Preston North End, Real Madrid, Milan, and the England national team for which he holds the appearance record for an outfield player.

Beckham’s career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first-team debut in 1992 aged 17. On 20 November 2011, he joined an elite group of players to have won three league titles in three different countries, when Los Angeles won their third MLS Cup. When joining the MLS in 2007 he was given the highest player salary in the league’s history, with his playing contract with the Galaxy over the next three years being worth US$6.5m per year.

Beckham helped the Galaxy to a fourth place finish in the MLS Western Conference 2012 regular season with Beckham scoring 7 goals and adding 9 assists. The Galaxy defeated Vancouver, San Jose and Seattle to earn a place in the MLS Cup Final. Beckham then announced that the 2012 MLS Cup Final would be his final game with the Galaxy despite having another year remaining on his contract.
